Desert Island Discs

I think that Desert Island Discs is the best programme on the radio – never miss it. I’ve just caught up with this week’s edition featuring leading cosmologist Professor Carlos Frenk.

Cosmologists are scientists who specialise in looking at the origin and evolution of the universe. So there’s a lot of discussion in this edition about the Big Bang, Dark Matter and Dark Energy. (Don’t ask me.)

We often hear that some people think that science has all the answers about the universe; that there’s no need for God now we know so much.

So it might come as a bit of a surprise to hear what Professor Frenk has to say on the subject when Kirsty Young asks him about his belief in God:-

“I don’t see how the order of the universe can be explained intrinsically within the universe itself”

And, after pointing out that physics can’t answer questions about God he returns to his view as a cosmologist “You look at the universe … well to me there’s only one conclusion.”

Fascinating stuff – Professor Frenk’s faith in God seems to spring from and be reinforced by his scientific understanding.

Have a listen to the show – you can find it at https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0b5s44q

If you don’t want to listen to the whole show (and I think you should – every week!) the section about his faith starts at about 32 minutes.

I hope you find it useful.
